Breakfast: Nasi lemak (which came with ikan bilis today, which I don't recall last time) and coffee with milk at 67 Killiney Kopitiam.

Lunch: Nasi biriyani with chicken, 2 items from BreadTalk (which both tasted the same... when will I learn?) and a soursop juice.

Dinner: Glass of red wine, "Moshi Mushroom" from BreadTalk, later a cup of packaged Japanese corn soup.

Breakfast: Something vaguely approaching a bagel with cream cheese, lox, onions, tomatoes and capers. Piece of "Mediterranean mackerel", horeseradish, onions. Glass of cranberry-kiwi juice, small box of raisins.

Breakfast: Nasi lemak, kaya toast and coffee with sweetend condensed milk at 67 Killiney Kopitiam.

This was one of most simple, wonderful meals I've had in Singapore thus far. I've not been big on breakfast from some years now, partly due to my frequent nocturnal tendencies, but also because the usual Western breakfast foodstuffs don't much appeal to me, and even frequently leave me feeling worse than I did before eating... the post-cereal milk dregs and mild reflux... the Weapons of Morning Destruction belly-bomb of eggs, bacon and toast... the cloying, sticky glop of pastries or donuts that leaves my hands feeling like I just funger-fucked a jar of rubber cement glue, and my belly experiencing pregnant pangs of regret and self-loathing the rest of the morning. Even "lighter fare" like fresh fruit and cottage cheese or a toasted bagel and some juice still somehow seems to underwhelm, at best.

But Asian breakfasts like this, a traditional Japanese breakfast, a couple of steamed buns and tea, or a hot bowl of noodle soup... these I can get into. I don't feel more weighed down and sluggish afterwards, I don't experience a sticky film of milky aftermath in my mouth, and I generally feel energized and ready to go do something after consuming a morning meal such as this.

And the coffee didn't suck, either. I've probably had about 5 decent cups of coffee in the past year in the States, and all of them were at Vietnamese restaurants.

Lunch: Slice of mozerella cheese on toasted wheat bread with pesto and tomatoes.

Dinner: Some sort of white fish cooked with garlic, soy suace, scallions, etc., stir fried cabbage, fried rice.

Later: Chunk of mozerella on wheat bread with mustard and hot sauce, cup of packaged Japanese corn soup, glass of milk.

Breakfast: Around 5am... unidentified Japanese instant soup mixes, cup of natto, a few squid strips, rice crackers and peanuts, water. Later on, curry puff (greasy as all git-out, ugh.. why do I order these things?) and large latte at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Soursop juice from Healthworks around noon, coming back from the American Club.

Lunch: Or maybe it's dinner at this point (5pm)... chicken rice set and a plum red tea from Food Chain.

Later: Roasted tomato with basil, some potatoes, Pellegrino mineral water, red wine, irish whiskey, cup of tom yum soup, Japanese nut and cracker mix, raisins.

Wednesday, September 24, 2003

Breakfast: Remaining odds and ends from BreadTalk, Ceres cranberry and kiwi juice, half a pomelo (which made my lips go sort of numb for a while) and a small box of raisins.

Breakfast: Mug of Horlicks.

Lunch: Indonesian restaurant in CentrePoint Mall... mango salad, chicken satay, kai lan, rice and lime juice.

Dinner: Leftover satay and kai lan from lunch, various items from BreadTalk, a couple of pretzels, glass of Calpis Water, glass of milk.

Sunday, September 21, 2003

Dinner: 3 items and rice from vendor in Orchard Emerald basement... ladyfingers, some sort of barbecued pork, (mostly fat) and greasy wilted cabbage. I think I need to find a new place to go. Large soursop juice from HealthWorks.

Later: Quick stir-fry of noodles, kailan, ladyfingers, sambal sotong, and egg. Pokka peach and aloe vera pulp drink.

Most I've eaten in several days.

Saturday, September 20, 2003

Dinner: Mish-mash of stuff... "Spicy Sambal Sotong (squid)" from a frozen package, reduced to savory rings of rubber by my improper microwave oven cooking method, stirfried kailan with oyster sauce, stirfried ladyfingers with chili sauce, crushed garlic and sliced chili padi, an assortment of items from BreadTalk, and several glasses of apple and aloe vera pulp beverage over ice.

Later, an F&N brand "Cheeky Cherryade".

Dinner: Sleep completely screwed up again... stayed up all night and slept until 6:30pm or so. Had leftover chicken biriyani, rice, vegetables, and a bit of mango chutney I found lurking in the back of the fridge, 100 Plus "isotonic drink", some sort of chocolate ice cream with a peculiar brand name. ("Movenpick"? Or something.)

Later made some iced Earl Grey tea, with sugar and lemon, munched on pretzels, rice cakes, completely flavorless British crackers, cheese chunks and the remnants of a container of hummus.

Wednesday, September 17, 2003

Breakfast: Nibbled some Nonya achar, two slices of wheat toast with blueberrry preserves and a glass of iced tea (leftover Twinings Earl Grey from last night) with lime and sugar.

Lunch: Takeaway Hainanese chicken rice set (chicken rice and bok choy) from a vendor in Food Chain at Orchard Emerald Plaza, large soursop juice from HealthWorks on Orchard. Chicken rice was okay but not as wonderful as I recall it being last time, more bony bits and the rice wasn't as fragrant and infused with flavor as I remember it having been previously.

Dinner: Went to Sento Japanese restaurant in StarHub Centre, had a tekka don teishoku (raw tuna over rice and nori, with raw egg, shiso leaf, clear soup and pickles) and two bottles of Asahi. The raw egg was a bit of a surprise, but a somewhat pleasant one, oddly enough. Hadn't noticed that in the picture on the menu. What you do is just mix it up with the rice which cooks it slightly. Like a Korean bi bim bap. Protein!

Makes me think that I should start having natto, rice and raw egg for breakfast at home.

Breakfast: Watermelon juice from a hawker stand near Chinatown.

Lunch: Chicken rice, baby kailan and a chin chow water at the Chatterbox Cafe in the Meritus Mandarin Hotel on Orchard Road. Supposedly "the best" chicken rice in S'pore, winner of "multiple awards", I thought it was okay... not bad, chicken was fine and the chili sauce was quite good, but the rice wasn't as fragrant and tasty as I was hoping for and it was definitely overpriced. I think I'll be sticking with the food courts and hawker stands. (Which have the added advantadge of being hella cheaper. Did I just say "hella"?)

Dinner: Stir-fried kailan with oyster sauce, fresh soursop juice from the vendor down the street and smattering of items I picked up at BreadTalk earlier in the afternoon. ("Chai Porlitics", "Bibi and Baba", "Nonya Chunk" and "Rockafella")

Sunday, September 07, 2003

Breakfast: (I guess) Two vegetarian char siew bau around 2 or 3 PM.

Lunch: Chicken rice, bok choy (thought I was ordering kai lan, hard to tell from some of those food court sign boards) and a "plum red tea" from the Emerald Orchard food court. (The actual name of which I can never recall... "Food Fair" or something?) The chicken was a little more fatty than I'd prefer, but it wasn't unexpected... that is the style, after all, and the rice was quite fragrant and tasty, and not greasy at all.

Later, a Pokka white grape juice and aloe pulp drink.

Friday, September 05, 2003

Late-night Snack: Peanut butter and strawberry jam on wheat bread, Pokka brand bluebrrry juice drink with aloe vera pulp bits in it.
