Breakfast: Chicken curry puff and a cappucino at Delifrance in Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This is the first curry puff I've ever had that was actually good, not at all greasy, and didn't make me cringe with regret for an hour after eating it. I'll have to see if the ones at Delifrance back in Singapore are any good.

Lunch: Had the "Japanese Lunch" on the flight from KLIA to Narita. According the menu which I snagged it consisted of...

Appetizer: Crab salad, red fish cake and konbumaki.
(I'm not sure I actually got this tho')
Soda: Japanese green tea noodles with soba sauce and traditional accompaniments. (i.e. chopped scallion, wasabi and nori bits)
Salmon teriyaki: Prepared expertly by our chefs. Complimented with Japanese steamed rice and assorted vegetables. (I recall the rice being dried out, but the fish itself wasn't half bad)
Seasonal fresh fruits.
Bread roll.
(which i don't think I got, but didn't miss and probably wouldn't have eaten anyway)
Ice cream. (which was some sort of rock-solid Nestle's Crunch ice cream bar, and I regretted accepting it afterwards)

Had a Pepsi to drink. Later on some orange juice, tea, and this little packet of Malay sweets (kueh?) that they gave out. They weren't bad, except for the durian flavored one, which I sampled briefly then placed back in the wrapper once it dawned on me what it was.

Snack: Can of iced coffee from a vending machine, bag of peanuts and a "yogurt and meusli" bar that I had been given as snacks on the plane, but wisely tucked into my bag in case I needed "emergency rations" later. Green tea from the dispensing machine in the hall.

Dinner: Bento and an Asahi from the 7-Eleven down the street from the hotel.

Breakfast: Did I eat breakfast? I think I had some hunks of salami. Earlier in the night I had lefotover pie and a glass of milk.

Lunch: Cha shu ramen, iced ocha at Sento.

Dinner: Bee hoon with fried egg and a mango juice from Suria Cafe in KLIA.

Midnight snack: Around 3am, unable to sleep, went to Burger King and ahad a "chicken royale" combo, i forget what the sandwich is called in the US, but it was just the standard BK breaded chicken thing. while eating, two girls who had been snoozing in one of the booths kept popping up their scarf-covered heads and looking at me. weird. meanwhile, the music playing kept crackling, sputtering and have a general mp3 stream breakdown. interestingly, I recognized one of the songs as the same one that i had recorded a busker in Singapore doing almost a year ago. apparently it's a Malaysian pop song.

next time, screw the transit hotel, (where is the clock radio???) i'm just going to pay the $18 and hang out in the transit lounge all night, drinking beer and surfing the web. wandered around a bit and found lots of folks stretched out on chairs snoozing, the are even some with footrests and many in out-of-the-way places, perfect for a makeshift bed.

Breakfast: Finally tried Chicken Singaporridge at the CentrePoint basement McDonald's, was actually pretty good. It's just jook, but for something you get at The Golden Arches, it was pretty decent. Later a perfectly awful iced mocha something or other at Starbuck's after going to the gym.

Lunch: Chicken rice set, soursop juice. You know the drill. And if you don't, you can read the archives.

Dinner: Went out looking for dinner around 11pm, but Tamaya, the Japanese place on Cuppage was closing, and nothing else that looked vaguely open piqued my interest. Figured I'd go to Mos Buger, but they were closed up too, as was the Burger King.

Briefly considered going to the 7-Eleven across the street and investigating the heat lamp-fortified glass case filled with disgusting looking fried fish sausage and fritter things (at least, that's what I imagine they are... not really sure) but nixed that idea and had decided to call it a wash when some mamasan spotted the lone ang mo that is me stumbling around in the dark on Orchard Road, and proceeded to offer me "nice girl for you" (last time it was "young girl", I guess they got old waiting) available in varieties such as Chinese and Russian, and promising "very good service". I politely declined with a couple of "no thank yous" while fiddling with a soda machine, trying to procure a warm, flat Pepsi. She tried offering her card in case I changed my mind, but eventually gave up, I got my drink and came back to the house.

Made a tuna with cheddar cheese and capers (which I couldn't taste) sandwich, a couple of little potato medallion things and warmed up a can of cut green beans. Could somebody please direct me to the nearest trailer park? I despertely need to locate the ambrosia Jell-O mold for dessert. Thanks.

Dinner: Went to Sento and got a selection of things... cold sake, a rice set (soup, rice, pickles), maguro sashimi, (not so good today, both taste and texture were disappointing), negima (also somewhat underwhelming, the sauce was overly sweet and the chicken not very tender or tasty) and agemochi natto, a new item and the saving grace of an otherwise uninspiring meal.

I was originally thinking maybe I'd just get the agemochi natto and a chicken ball kaminabe or a bowl of soba, but decided to do otherwise. I should have listened to my inner maitre d'.

Lunch: Packaged house-brand "tempura soyu" (sic) flavor udon from Cold Storage. (not sure where the "tempura" bit came into it tho') Noticed it was made in Korea. Not bad tho', much better than the last couple of Korean-made Japanese-style things I've had. I have painfully clear memories of just how horrible the last kitsune udon I bought at a Korean grocery store in Oakland was.

Dinner: Tried this Sichuan-style restaurant that was written up in the Straits Times a couple of weeks ago. Forgot the name, but it's located at 9 Purvis Street. Was hoping for REALLY REALLY REALLY hot and spicy food, and while some of the dishes definitely had some kick and I broke a slight sweat, it was nowhere near as intense as I had hoped for. In fact, the pork with spring onions, which wasn't spicy at all, was the clear winner of the evening taste-wise. Would definitely give it another try tho', the vegetable dishes were also very good, and nothing stuck me as being greasy. At least not by Chinese standards.

Stopped off for my ever popular soursop juice on the way back from the MRT. Yummm.

Later: Granny Smith apple, Pellegrino mineral water. Small bowl of granola to settle my topsy-turvy stromach before turning in.

Dinner: Finally tried "Oden" on the corner in Orchard Emerald, which not surprisingly, serves oden. Never having been to an oden restaurant before, I wasn't quite sure what the proper way eat it was, and I still don't, but it was decent, if not exceptional. Price was moderate... about S$80 for a variety of dishes for two, and it was actually too much food, ended up getting the remainder for takeaway. One of the non-oden items we got was teriyaki salmon, which was superb... a far cry from the sticky sweet goop I'm used to getting in the US, this had a rich smokiness to it which was fantastic. I'd go back and just get some of that.

Came home and Japan Hour was on, and they went to a gyoza shop which offered "angry monkey dumpling", which had picked shallot (or garlic?) in it. I love that name, particularly taken out of context, but it sounded delicious, too!

Dinner: Went to Buko Nero on Tanjong Pagar, a cozy husband and wife run Asian-influenced Italian restaurant. Had the set menu du jour, comprising 5 or 6 different items which I'm too tipsy to clearly recount in detail at the moment, but everything was excellent. This was my second time there, and I like this place a lot. The portions are a bit on the smallish side for me, but the serving of the courses has been excellently paced both times I've been there, and the attention to detail is superb. I like the atmosphere there, too... outfitted primarily with furniture and tableware I recognize from Ikea, it's chic without feeling too uppity or pretentious. Tastefully done on the cheap.

I've noticed Ikea products in use at quite a number of other eateries here and it seems perfectly sensible to me. Not to sound like a walking advertisement for the place, but they do offer some pretty decent stuff at very affordable prices and it's interesting for me to see it used to good effect by the young owners of these establishments. Even if I do feel slighly like I'm dining inside of an episode of MTV's "The Real World".

Not sure where I'm going with this, my thoughts are usually muddled enough without the alcoholic enhancements, so I'd best stop while I'm ahead.

Lunch: Mediterranean salad with grilled chicken breast at The American Club, ice water.

Sunday, November 02, 2003

Breakfast: 1/2 a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, glass of milk.

Lunch: Omelette and toast with apricot jam, iced oolong tea.

Dinner: Rojak and a pineapple juice.

Dinner: Woke up noon-ish, went downstairs, checked eMail, and proceeded to fall asleep for most of the afternoon on the couch. I'm still not sure if it's something in the air down there of it's just Singapore TV that makes me want to lie down and play dead. As a result, I didn't have lunch. Had takeaway fish ball soup from a Food Chain vendor and a large mango and strawberry juice from HealthWorks. The soup cost S$3, the juice was S$6. Still, it's good juice, and nice folks working there, and by US prices, that's still reasonably priced. (about $3.50 USD)

Later: Two microwaved vegetarian pau, water with liberal squeeze of lime juice.

Even later: Scrambled egg and onions on wheat toast with roasted (forgot the kind of pepper!) Tabasco sauce, more water and lime juice, apple & banana (I think) fruit cup.
