Saturday, May 29, 2004

Lunch: Kimuchi daikon, ume boshi, shiso leaves, napa sanmi (sp?) zuke, natto, Nissin kitsune udon, ocha.

Later, calamansi juice packets in water with sugar.

Dinner: Shrimp and pork wontons in chicken soup, dash of chili, wilted spinach with Chinese wolfberries, sauteed bok choy with a splash of rice vinegar and soy sauce, calamansi juice in water with sugar.

Lunch: Some sort of canned congee with red beans, oats, etc. that I picked up at 99 Ranch.

Dinner: Tempura and chicken kushiyaki dinner set at Yokohama, large Asahi, a bit of ocha. Good portions, but the taste underwhelmed me. Sub-futtsu. I mean, there wasn't anything wrong with it, per se, but there wasn't anything particularly right about it either.

Ate all the tempura, wondering where the flavor was. Best bit was a surprise crunchy root vegetable which produced unnerving hair-like strings when you took a bite of it then moved it away from your mouth. Apparently it was moutain yam... yamaimo, I think it's called. New experience, I liked it.

The kushiyaki didn't taste like much of anything, save for the burnt bits. I realize that I barely even touched my rice, only occasionally picking up small bites of it, and utilizing the bowl more as something for my left hand to do than as anything to actually eat out of.

Snack: 2 cups of Japanese green tea, slice of kaya toast, small box of raisins.

Later: Bowl of Nissin tempura soba. Greasier than whatever the other brand I usually get is, and not as tasty, either.

Lunch: Leftover braised bean curd and vegetables, rice from last night.

Dinner: Pork and shrimp wonton (8) in chicken broth with a dash of chili, wilted spinach with go qui, ("Chinese Wolfberry") iced calamansi juice with a touch of sugar.

Later: Before bed finished off the remaining braised bean curd dish and the rice.

Lunch: A smattering of little things I bought at Yaoya-san yesterday.

Cold Japanese tofu with shaved bonito and a dash of shoyu. Kimuchi daikon, nappa something zuke, grilled unagi skewer, ohba leaf, nori. Natto and pre-cooked rice with green onion. Ocha with ume boshi.

I've known about the pre-cooked rice for a while, but never tried it until now. Verdict: it was definitely rice at some point, but it's got a bit too plastic of a flavor or my tastes. Still, in a pinch it would suffice.

Snack: Remaining 2 unagi skewers and a glass of milk.

Dinner: Went to King of King in Oakland. Had braised tofu with vegetables, steamed rice, tea. Good, but not so hungry, so lots of leftovers. Yay!

On a side note, I noticed a bunch of Chinese folks at a nearby table seemed to be glancing over at me repeatedly. Maybe it's just because I'm a big goofy looking gwei lo, but I'm wondering if it was something to do with the way I was eating, the way I held my chopsticks (Which I had to ask for! I don't like that new waitress...) or the way I cradled my rice bowl in my hand. Dunno. I'll have to get my friend Justin to watch me sometime and tell me if I'm doing it weird.

Midnight snack: Slice of apple pie at Nation's. Wanted it ala mode, but the girl said "the machine" was turned off, so I guess it's just as well... soft serve ice cream analog on a slice of pie just doesn't sound right.

Glass of milk before bed.

Breakfast: Left work at some ungodly hour like 5:00 AM. Bleary-eyed and craving bau, I drove over to Oakland but none of the morning dim sum places showed any signs of life yet. Drove back to San Pablo, went to Denny's, had a Grand Slam (eggs scrambled) and a large grapefruit juice.

Dinner: Woke up at about 3:30 PM, did some shopping and then went to New Pagolac. Had a "shrimp, squid, fish ball, boneless chicken, slice of pork" noodle soup and a soda xi muoi. Wasn't terribly hungry so I ate the various meats and seafoods and the veggies, but left most of the noodles. It was just starch I didn't need, anyhow.

Later, Justin came by and we went to Daimo. We split an order of salt and pepper ribs, and I had a bit of cha shu from his order of the ever-auspicious menu item #168 (cha shu lo mein). Drank a Tsing Tao and a couple cups of tea.

Lunch: Perfectly awful "Ultimate Turkey Sub" from 7-11, bottle of water.

Dinner: 3 or 4 pieces of even more awful Pizza Hut pizza. Water.

Friday, May 21, 2004

Lunch: Greek salad and an iced tea with lemon from Jack In the Box drive-thru.

Dinner: Tomato-chipotle soup, tomato and mozzarella salad, bread and olives from Whole Foods, water.

Low-fat strawberry milk.

Lunch: Leftover kung pao chicken, white rice, ice water.

Dinner: Justin came by wanting to get something to eat, ended up at Daimo, naturally. I had ostrich with ginger and scallion tossed noodle, which was ho-hum. We split an order of fried salt and pepper smelt as an appetizer (served last, in true Daimo tradition) which was surprisingly good. A Tsing Tao and tea to drink, complimentary green bean dessert soup, which was a bit better than the last time I had it, but I still prefer the red bean.

Lunch: Ordered a large mesquite chicken and bacon sub at Quizno's... got a mesquite chicken, bacon and GUACAMOLE sub. Which was okay, but it didn't need the guacamole. And neither did I. Seemed to increase the price drastically, too. But I wasn't in the mood to argue and make them go back and do the whole thing over.

Got the combo with chips and an iced tea.

More meat this time around, and overall the sandwich was a bit more flavorful than my previous two Quizno's encounters, but still seemed lacking. Consistently mediocre. Not like I should expect otherwise from a corporate chain food-like-substance vendor outlet in a strip mall. Universal burger predictability.

Dinner: Kung pao chicken and steamed rice at Daimo, iced Hong Kong sytle milk tea. Complimentary sweet red bean soup for dessert.

I requested the kung pao chicken extra spicy, but if anything it seemed maybe less potent than the kung pao prawns I had there a few nights ago. Perhaps I should have asked for extra dried chillis in it and told them not to make it "gwei lo spicy". (i.e., not very spicy at all)

Lunch: Went to the newly opened Quizno's off of San Pablo Dam Road, had a regular turkey sub, salt & vinegar chips, "tropical" iced tea. Expected more flavor, expected more meat.

Dinner: Was out in Oakland and didn't feel like Vietnamese so went down International to El Taco Zamorano and got a chicken burrito and a Jarrito tamarindo. They've made some changes since the last time I was down there... they now have benches out in front of the truck for the patrons, as well as an honest-to-goodness cash register. A cash register in a taco truck? What the fuck? It even neatly itemized my order, right down to particular flavor of soda I got.

I wonder if they accept credit cards now?

Breakfast: Microwaved cha shu bau from 99 Ranch deli.

Lunch: New Pagolac: vermicelli with barbecued pork and shrimp rolls, "nuoc mat (herb drink)" which turned out to be Yeo's brand chin chow water in a can. Too syrupy. But made in Malaysia.

Later, a cup of masala chai with condensed milk.

Dinner:
